History

Desert Sands RV Resort was built in 1979 by Robert McMackin. Inspired by trips through Mexico, the Southwest and Santa Fe, The Desert Sands RV Resort, in it’s classic adobe style, is an architectural stand-out in the region. Hearkening to the roadside charm found along Route 66 and in keeping with a classic roadside stop, our Pittman General Store is a charming mercantile shop offering modern sundries and an excellent cafe. The General Store is named in honor of Nevada Senator Key Pittman, who served as the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations during the Roosevelt administration. Pittman also refers to the original community in Henderson built along Boulder Highway. Dating from 1929, some of the first homes sites in Henderson, housing the workers building Hoover Dam, were in this exact area. When purchasing the land for the resort, maps were redrawn from the original 50’ sites used for pitching tents. Historic Quonset Huts and a former motel round out the grounds of the Desert Sands Resort. Mr. Mc Mackin and his family welcome you to enjoy the history of the Desert Sands Recreational Vehicle Resort. Come see us in the office and say “hi”.

The Desert Sands RV Resort is located in Henderson, the second largest city in Nevada, after Las Vegas. The city is part of the Las Vegas metropolitan area, which spans the entire Las Vegas Valley.  With it’s natural magnesium resource, Henderson was "born in America's defense” during World War II.

In 2010, Money Magazine named Henderson one of the best places to retire as part of it’s “100 Best Money Moves You Can Make” list. In 2011, Forbes magazine ranked Henderson as America's second safest city. Henderson has also been named as "One of the Best Cities to Live in America" by Bloomberg Businessweek. Henderson has one of the most concentrated networks of park system in the country. Prevention magazine listed Henderson as the sixth best walking city in America, ahead of San Diego, California, and just behind Seattle, Washington. Henderson contains more than 80 linear miles of trails. Trip Advisor, the worlds largest travel site, named Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve (3 miles from the Desert Sands) a 2015 Certificate of Excellence. The Desert Sands provides the valley’s closest recreational vehicle access to Lake Mead and Lake Las Vegas.
